Where Your Mind Lives, Your Life Follows Romans 8:5-6 (CSB) "For those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their minds set on the things of the Spirit. Now the mindset of the flesh is death, but the mindset of the Spirit is life and peace." Romans 8:5-6 Over the last few weeks we have heard Pastor Gary speak on What do you Want, Pastor JR speak on Be an Agent of Change and Break the Loop (Repeated thoughts). What has been the common piece to these messages? CHOICES. Remove the blame. Remove the magic. Would it be fair to say that you and I are a product of our choices? Would it be fair to say that our lives and our minds (our beliefs) are where they are because as Romans 8:5-6 states we lived according to… and have set our mind on… The passage teaches that behavior stems from a person's fundamental disposition—what the mind is "set" upon. Maturity ONLY comes with Action. Time and Inaction does not bring maturity. (The old fool?) Romans 8:5-6 is a piece in the road map of life. Remember a map can be filled with incredible journeys and unknowns but unless you choose to move forward, desire to grow, desire to be healed (Be real.. God knows healing is hard, that is why he gave us the Holy Spirit and God’s provision.), desire to impact others, you will remain by choice stagnant and no, the Lord is not pleased. Psalms 1:29-31 29 "For they hated knowledge (Romans 8:5-6) and chose not to fear the Lord. 30 They rejected my advice (Word of God) and paid no attention when I corrected them. 31 Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way, choking on their own schemes." Proverbs 1:29–31 is a mirror. It asks us to look at where we are actively resisting correction or ignoring sound wisdom in our lives right now. It reminds us that whether we are 18 or 80, the choices we make today are actively sowing the seeds for the fruit we will have to eat tomorrow. I repeat, where your mind LIVES your LIFE will follow. One of the barriers to a Spirit mindset. The fear of surrender and vulnerability. In other words: Humility James 4:10 "Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." 1 Proverbs 11:2 "When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom." Opening the door completely means allowing Christ access to every "room" of our lives, including hidden sins, past hurts, and secret habits. Fear of what He will require us to give up causes us to keep the door not just locked but BOLTED!!. Remember: As a child of God freedom is yours for the taking. In the New Testament, "freedom in Christ" is a central theme. It does not mean a license to do whatever we want; rather, it refers to liberation from the power of sin, the burden of the law, fear, and condemnation. Galatians 5:13 "For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another." Live as someone who has been bought with a price. Question: How do I practically do that? Practice Daily Mind-Setting: Begin each morning by consciously surrendering your thoughts to God, asking the Holy Spirit to direct your focus toward things that please Him. (Christian Position Statement) Memorize Scripture to Reprogram Thoughts: Replace intrusive, ungodly thoughts with truth by meditating on specific biblical passages when temptation or negativity arises. Cultivate Spiritual Environments: Prioritize (Be intentional) fellowship, worship, and biblical study with other believers to reinforce a Spirit-led mindset. How is Romans 8:5-6 Relevance to the Pillars of Life Spiritual: Directly impacts eternal security and daily fellowship with God. A Spirit-set mind deepens communion with Christ and fosters spiritual maturity. 2 Mental: Addresses mental health, focus, and clarity. Shifting focus away from the anxiety-inducing patterns of the world protects the mind from cognitive chaos and toxic thought cycles. Emotional: The natural byproduct of a Spirit-led mind is peace, which stabilizes emotions, mitigates fear, and counters despair. Relational: A fleshly mindset breeds envy, strife, and selfishness. Conversely, being spiritually minded manifests the fruit of the Spirit, fostering healthier, more forgiving, and loving relationships. Life Challenges Challenge 1: Wandering Thoughts and Mental Distractions Believers often struggle with keeping their minds focused on spiritual matters amidst a fast-paced, highly stimulating world, leading to an accidental drift back into fleshly anxieties. Biblical Solution: Philippians 4:8 (NLT) — "And now, brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." Challenge 2: The Persistent Pull of the Old Nature Even as believers, the residual habits, desires, and automatic responses of the sinful nature can feel incredibly strong, making total surrender to the Spirit feel exhausting or impossible. Biblical Solution: Ephesians 4:22-24 (NLT) — "throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly righteous and holy." Conclusion: Praise Points ● Praise God that through Jesus Christ, the power of the sinful nature has been broken, and we are no longer slaves to its demands. 3 ● Praise God for the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit, who actively counsels, guides, and empowers us from within. ● Praise God for His promise of life and peace, which stands secure despite the chaos and instability of the world around us. Romans 8:5-6 establishes an unyielding spiritual reality: our mental preoccupation determines our spiritual condition and ultimate destiny. Setting the mind on the flesh leads strictly to spiritual bankruptcy and death. Conversely, surrendering the mind to the governance of the Holy Spirit reaps a harvest of vibrant spiritual life and deep internal peace. Ultimately, holy living is not a matter of rigid rule-following, but a continuous, intentional choice to allow the Spirit of God to occupy, direct, and transform our thoughts.
